Be mindful and self-aware to create the right balance

- LATHA NARASIMHAN The writer is based in Sharjah

Blaming ourselves for whatever happens or blaming someone else for anything that happens to us are the most common escape routes we choose. Hence, setting boundaries for ourselves and for others become important. By setting boundaries we can preserve our mental and physical health and establish our identities. Once others become aware of our values, they will respect us.

Though we know that setting boundaries is crucial, we need to know how we can set them. If we decide on our core values, do what we say, believe in actions more than in words, and realise the consequences before we take any steps, we can set strong boundaries. Lack of boundaries allows others to dictate our thoughts and actions.

Professional boundaries define effective and appropriate interaction between professionals and the public they serve. The three most important boundaries are: physical involving personal space and touch, mental involving thoughts and opinion, and emotional dealing with feelings. We can maintain levels of boundaries by naming our limits, being self-aware, seeking support when needed and by being a direct communicator.

Setting boundaries does not mean shutting people away. Healthy boundaries teach us how to love and respect ourselves. Being mindful and self-aware helps in creating the muchneeded balance which is the essence of a soulful life.
