Death sentence for man who killed friend for refusing to marry sister
abu dhabi — A worker has been sentenced to death by the Abu Dhabi Criminal Court of First Instance for killing his colleague who refused to marry his sister.
Court documents stated that the Bangladeshi victim had refused the defendant’s proposal to marry his sister, who was staying with his parents back home. The pair then got into an argument which turned into a fight.
The victim took a kitchen knife but the defendant grabbed it from him and stabbed him several times in the chest and in the stomach. The man fell unconscious on the ground and later died as a result of his injuries.
The defendant was arrested after investigations revealed that he carried out the murder. During interrogation, he confessed to the crime.
The investigation revealed that the defendant had given some money to the victim, which was to be used for the wedding preparations. However, he later turned down the proposal. A medical report showed the victim had been drunk at the time of death.
Prosecutors charged the defendant with premeditated murder. The man denied the charge in the court. He claimed that he attacked his friend in self-defence but didn’t mean to kill him.
At a previous hearing, the defence lawyer argued that there was no criminal intent in the case. He requested that the charge be changed from premeditated murder to assault leading to death.
The lawyer also explained that the victim attacked his client first using the knife and the man grabbed it from him and stabbed him back in self-defence.
The court, however, rejected the claims and convicted the worker based on his earlier confession and on the evidence presented by prosecutors.
