Four-year-old drowns in school pool

sharjah — A four-year-old boy drowned in the swimming pool of a well-known private school in Sharjah on Wednesday. The police were notified about the death at 10.30am.

The Emirati boy was rushed to Al Qasimi Hospital, where he was declared brought dead. The hospital management informed the police, who have formed a special team to investigat­e the incident.

source told Khaleej Times if the probe reveals the student died during the physical education class, the supervisor would be held accountabl­e. If it emerges that the child managed to sneak into the swimming pool, the security guard would be held responsibl­e.

The police said this was the first time a student had drowned in a school swimming pool in the emirate. The school will remain closed on Thursday to mourn the boy.

Authoritie­s warned that “strict action” would be taken “depending on the outcome of the investigat­ion”. Mohammed Al Mulla, Director of the Sharjah Education Council (SEC), said: “Necessary action will be taken against the school after investigat­ion procedures are completed.”

The SEC and the Ministry of Education are monitoring the police investigat­ion closely. A team from the council has visited the school to investigat­e and is “currently awaiting the results of the police probe”.
