Born in southern Italy, in Reggio Calabria, Donatella studied languages at the University of Florence before embarking with her brother Gianni on his Versace adventure. As a sister, best friend and muse of the couturier, she assists with all the collections, takes part in each of his decisions, supervises all the legendary advertising campaigns signed Richard Avedon, Irving Penn or Helmut Newton and is entrusted 1994, the artistic direction of Versus, Versace’s rebellious sister brand. Following the tragic death of Gianni in 1997, she took the reigns of the company. In a beautiful book recently published by Rizzoli, Donatella shares her best memories of the Versace saga. The book is reminiscent of personal anecdotes and illustrated with exclusive archive images, but also the most memorable red carpet looks, as well as the advertising campaigns of the 1990s. Proud of her past and anchored in the present, Donatella devotes a cult to novelty. After Australia and before Macao in China, Donatella has just inaugurated Palazzo Versace in Dubai, where she created the interior design.
With her strong flair for talent, she chose Christopher Kane, J.W. Anderson and Anthony Vaccarello to revive Versus, and has just announced an unprecedented partnership with Zayn Malik. The boyfriend of Gigi Hadid is the very first pop star to venture into the development of a capsule collection for men and women for Versus. It is in May 2017 that this collection Zayn × Versus will be available and a part of its profits will be donated to charities. Intuitive and bold, Donatella has made the choice of the see now / buy now / wear now concept for Versus. Which means that all the pieces of the brand will be available for purchase directly after the fashion show. Fascinated by the digital era and a loyal follower of Instagram, she recently launched an account that conscientiously feeds posts on her passions and behind the scenes of the house of Versace. The spring-summer 2017 collection, energetic, sporty and nevertheless very feminine, is the ideal wardrobe of a woman “who takes risks”, according to the designer.
Passionate artistic director and overactive businesswoman, Donatella Versace consolidated the empire that was founded by her brother and brought the brand into a new innovative and dynamic era.
THE WOMAN ACCORDING TO DONATELLA
What is the definition of the Versace woman? There is not a specific type of woman who wears Versace. It is an attitude and a boldness that unites women from a variety of backgrounds and experiences. What matters to me today is the individuality of the woman and her strength of character. I love women who make their own success and true power. What did Versace bring to women since its inception? Versace has always helped women feel strong, powerful and proud. Women have achieved so much, but they still have a long way to go. Fashion plays an important role because it is aimed at a billion women in the world. Versace is synonymous of emancipation, independence and strength. What are you trying to bring to women with your creations? When I create my collections, I always think about modern women and the complexity of their lives. They have multiple responsibilities, family, friends, social life and privacy. But, above all, they have control over their lives. It is this force which I try to transcribe in my fashion shows because fashion allows women to show what they are and demonstrate the power they exert over the world. What satisfies you? Emancipation! Women have the right to whatever they want. What kind of women do you admire? All those who fight for their rights and who, like me, are in love with life, while being faithful and true to themselves.
