Westbrook nets bumper $205m OKC contract
Russell Westbrook has become the highest-paid player in NBA history next season after the reigning MVP agreed to a five-year, $205 million (Dh752.8m) contract extension with the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Westbrook’s new deal kicks in for the 2018-19 campaign and means he’ll be paid a guaranteed $233m over the next six seasons.
The 28-year-old produced a historic ‘triple-double’ season for OKC in 2016-17, averaging 31.6 points, 10.7 rebounds and 10.4 assists and keeping his team competitive in the Western Conference following the shock departure of Kevin Durant to the Golden State Warriors.
Last night’s announcement also led to plenty of speculation regarding its timing as it was made on Durant’s 29th birthday with bad blood still existing between the player and his former team.
Westbrook, who was drafted fourth by the franchise in 2009, said: “When you play in Oklahoma City you play in front of the best fans in the world.
“I’m looking forward to bringing everything I’ve got, for them, this city and for this organisation.”
