Aussie Barty has title on home soil within sight
Ashleigh Barty reached her first WTA Tour final on home soil at the Sydney International.
The 21-year-old is the home country’s leading female hope for the Australian Open and she recovered from a set down to defeat countrywoman Daria Gavrilova 3-6, 6-4, 6-2.
Barty said on wtatennis.com: “I’d love to go one further and hold the trophy up here. I love playing in Australia, I love playing at home. It’s nice to be able to get a lot of matches here and be rewarded with the final.”
If Barty is to lift the trophy she must do what no other player has been able to do so far this season and beat former world number one Angelique Kerber.
Elise Mertens, meanwhile, beat Heather Watson 6-4, 1-6, 6-2 at the Hobart International and will face Romania’s Mihaela Buzarnescu, who reached her first WTA Tour final with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over fifth seed Lesia Tsurenko.
