In a world which is becoming increasingly urbanised it’s not surprising that sports which can easily be undertaken in a cityscape are fast on the rise.

Sports like parkour or freerunning, skully and streetball are becoming more and more popular across the world along with other sports which can be played in a relatively small space or even indoors – basketball, Futsal, volleyball and handball just to name a few.

Another fast growing sport is Tower Running, which in a city with the third most skyscrapers in the world (after New York and Hong Kong) is perfect for Dubai.

According to Wikipedia: “Tower Running is a sport which involves running up tall man-made structures. Usually the races take place on the internal staircases of skyscrapers, but the term can cover any foot race which involves a course that ascends a man-made structure.”

Races often take place at the world’s tallest, and most famous, buildings such as the Taipei 101, Menara Tower in Kuala Lumpur, Willis Tower in Chicago, Tower 42 in London, the Empire State Building in New York and of course Dubai’s own Burj Khalifa.

There are two formats for Tower Running, either time trial with a staggered start or the more chaotic mass-start format and races attract elite athletes from other sports often with the promise of lucrative prize money.

There’s even the Tower Running World Cup which takes into consideration results of more than 160 races on all continents.

The latest skyscraper to join the trend is Media One in Media City, which will host its second annual M1 Run on Saturday February 17.

The “fun and engaging vertical run” is open to individuals and teams and you’ll have a chance to share in some great prizes: AED 5,000 (to spend at Media One) for the fastest team plus for individuals AED 1,200 for 1st place, AED 500 for 2nd and AED 250 for 3rd.

You can also get numerous rewards – more than AED50,000 in prizes from Eat Clean, Lulelemon, Guavapass, Coca-Cola, Tribe Fit, FitBit and others, plus AED10,000 in raffle draw vouchers with room nights and brunches at Media One.

The start time is a leisurely 10:00 and Race Pack Collection is on the day of the event at cafeM on the ground floor, so there’s nothing to do beforehand except register which you can do at www.premieronline.com.

Registrations costs Dh99 and entitles you to a certificate, goody bag, access to live results, medal, photo service, refreshments, timing and raffle draw.
