WELCOME

Smartphones are now ubiquitous with modern life.

Look up from reading this magazine (but only for a second, mind) and if you’re in an even slightly crowded place I can guarantee that you’ll spot at least a handful of people around you, face down, engrossed in whatever’s happening on the five-point-something inch screen nestled in their hands. And really, who can blame them?

Smartphones now represent so many facets of our lives; a window connecting us with the world at large (read: The Internet), an easy way to snap photos for posterity and the now default method of human interaction, be it Facebook, Twitter or Snapchat. Heck, they’re not too shabby at making the occasional phone call either.

What remains overwhelming for most of us is the sheer number of options available in the market, and being savvy enough to wade through all the white noise to find the cream of the crop because, let’s face it, why would you spend your hard earned space bucks on anything less? That’s why this month we’ve put Android’s smartest and shiniest, the HTC One M8, LG G3, Galaxy S5 and Xperia Z2 through the ringer in a superphone smackdown on p28.

For those of you more tablet-inclined, we get our smudgy fingertips all over the new Samsung Galaxy Tab S (p43) - and whether you end up buying one of those or the G3 (or both, you salty dog) be sure you push their gorgeous screens to the max by checking out our indie film recommendations on p64. Enjoy the mag.
