Wel­come to the fourth edi­tion of The Black Hat Guide, the UAE’s first fully rated restau­rant guide from the UAE’s best-sell­ing en­ter­tain­ment mag­a­zine, What’s On.

This year has seen around 50 new restau­rants open their doors in Abu Dhabi – and What’s On’s crack team of food re­view­ers has been to, and tried the food at, all of them. We’ve dined on fine sushi, eaten suc­cu­lent mixed grills while ad­mir­ing sun­sets, stuffed our faces with cheese­burg­ers and milk­shakes and put on a com­bined weight of an ele­phant as a re­sult. It’s a dirty job, but some­one had to do it.

The good news is What’s On re­ally knows Abu Dhabi. We’ve not just vis­ited the most ex­pen­sive out­lets in the cap­i­tal – we’re just as pas­sion­ate about the small in­de­pen­dent eater­ies also vy­ing for your dirhams. There are a few real hid­den gems in this guide.

We’ve cov­ered the globe sev­eral times when it comes to try­ing cuisines, from Greek to Chi­nese to Brazil­ian to Korean. And we’ve done it all to make this year’s The Black Hat Guide the only dining com­pan­ion you need: and the most com­pre­hen­sive guide to eat­ing out in the cap­i­tal.

Our rat­ing sys­tem is ex­plained over the page. Just re­mem­ber one thing: a hat is a hat, and a white or a shaded hat means just as much in its price cat­e­gory as the cov­eted black hat does. Also don’t for­get that if a restau­rant doesn’t have a hat, it doesn’t mean it’s not good – it’s just got some work to do to over­take the com­pe­ti­tion.
