Situated on west 23rd street, The Chelsea Hotel once existed as an informal artists’ community. In the latter half of the 1900s, the 400 room hotel housed artists who lived for free, or traded their work for rent. The hotel was a destination for tourists, paying to rent bleak rooms for the opportunity to witness the emerging art elite who lived and played there. Rockstars like Joni Mitchell, Patti Smith and Janis Joplin could be found writing and mingling amongst a crowd of painters, literary artists, fashion designers, ilm directors and Warhol’s “Factory Girls.”
