UAE FTA, ITWU sign MOU to pro­tect sea­far­ers’ rights

ABU DHABI: The UAE Fed­eral Author­ity for Land and Mar­itime Trans­port (UAE FTA) has signed a Mem­o­ran­dum of Un­der­stand­ing (MOU) with the In­ter­na­tional Trans­port work­ers union( it wu) as part of the UAE’S author­ity efforts to pro­tect the rights of sea­far­ers on board ships.

The MOU was signed by Hessa Al Ma­lik, Ex­ec­u­tive Di­rec­tor of the Mar­itime sec­tor at th eu aef ta, and Stephen cot­ton, sec­re­tary-gen­eral of ITF, in the pres­ence of Dr. Ab­dul­lah bin Mo­hammed Bel­haif Al Nuaimi, Min­is­ter of In­fra­struc­ture De­vel­op­ment and Chair­man of the Board of Di­rec­tors of the Fed­eral Author­ity for Land and Mar­itime Trans­port.

Dr. Al Nuaimi said that the MOU

aims to work on joint and con­tin­u­ous con­sul­ta­tion to ind le­gal solutions re­gard­ing the sea­far­ers aban­don­ment of ships by ship own­ers and op­er­a­tors, and to pre­vent the oc­cur­rence of this phe­nom­e­non in the fu­ture.

The UAE FTA and ITF agreed to bi­lat­er­ally co­op­er­ate to in­clude cases of aban­don­ment ships lo­cated in the ter­ri­to­rial wa­ters of the UAE and on ves­sels ly­ing the UAE lag through: Shar­ing in­for­ma­tion, ideas and tech­ni­cal knowl­edge, pro­vid­ing up to date in­for­ma­tion on cur­rent cases, as well as im­me­di­ately shar­ing new re­ports of aban­don­ment and pro­vid­ing in­for­ma­tion, and ad­vice and train­ing on in­ter­na­tional le­gal In­stru­ments in­clud­ing the Mar­itime La­bor Con­ven­tion, 2006.
