UAE FTA, ITWU sign MOU to protect seafarers’ rights
ABU DHABI: The UAE Federal Authority for Land and Maritime Transport (UAE FTA) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the International Transport workers union( it wu) as part of the UAE’S authority efforts to protect the rights of seafarers on board ships.
The MOU was signed by Hessa Al Malik, Executive Director of the Maritime sector at th eu aef ta, and Stephen cotton, secretary-general of ITF, in the presence of Dr. Abdullah bin Mohammed Belhaif Al Nuaimi, Minister of Infrastructure Development and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Federal Authority for Land and Maritime Transport.
Dr. Al Nuaimi said that the MOU
aims to work on joint and continuous consultation to ind legal solutions regarding the seafarers abandonment of ships by ship owners and operators, and to prevent the occurrence of this phenomenon in the future.
The UAE FTA and ITF agreed to bilaterally cooperate to include cases of abandonment ships located in the territorial waters of the UAE and on vessels lying the UAE lag through: Sharing information, ideas and technical knowledge, providing up to date information on current cases, as well as immediately sharing new reports of abandonment and providing information, and advice and training on international legal Instruments including the Maritime Labor Convention, 2006.
