The Sharjah Art Foundation is showing Factory Complex, a powerful documentary film by Im Heung-soon that acknowledges the hardships faced by the female workforce driving South Korea’s great economic boom. The story starts in the 1960s, with the lives of women who survived gruelling conditions working in the textile industry, and goes on to document the working conditions of flight attendants, cashiers and uncontracted workers in the decades that have followed. As Im points out, that cycle of oppression is still going on in Asia but its location has changed to Cambodia. The film, which won the Silver Lion at the 2015 Venice Biennale, is being shown tonight at 8.30pm at Mirage City Cinema (sharjahart.org).
