Admire the work of a great scientific illustrator
To mark the 300th anniversary of the death of the naturalist and artist Maria Sibylla Merian, the Berlin Kupferstichkabinett and the Städel Museum in Frankfurt are showing Merian’s drawings of flowers and insects. The German scientist spent two years in South America documenting her observations and Metamorphosis insectorum Surinamensium, published on her return in 1705, established her as an outstanding entomologist. This exhibition of 150 of her illustrations includes loans from other collections. Maria Sibylla Merian and the Tradition of Flower Illustration is being shown at the Berlin Kupferstichkabinett until July 2 (www.smb.museum).
