Ad­mire the work of a great sci­en­tific il­lus­tra­tor

To mark the 300th an­niver­sary of the death of the nat­u­ral­ist and artist Maria Sibylla Me­rian, the Ber­lin Kupfer­stichk­abi­nett and the Städel Museum in Frankfurt are show­ing Me­rian’s draw­ings of flow­ers and in­sects. The Ger­man sci­en­tist spent two years in South Amer­ica doc­u­ment­ing her ob­ser­va­tions and Me­ta­mor­pho­sis in­sec­to­rum Suri­na­men­sium, pub­lished on her re­turn in 1705, es­tab­lished her as an out­stand­ing en­to­mol­o­gist. This ex­hi­bi­tion of 150 of her il­lus­tra­tions in­cludes loans from other col­lec­tions. Maria Sibylla Me­rian and the Tra­di­tion of Flower Illustration is be­ing shown at the Ber­lin Kupfer­stichk­abi­nett un­til July 2 (www.smb.museum).
