Two dead in attack on luxury Mali resort

-

BAMAKO // At least two people died in an attack last night by suspected Islamist militant gunmen on a luxury resort outside Mali’s capital Bamako. Le Campement Kangaba in Dougourakoro, to the east of the capital, is popular with western expatriate residents for holidays and weekend breaks.

“Security forces are in place. Campement Kangaba is blocked off and an operation is under way,” a security ministry spokesman said. Security has worsened in Mali since 2013, when French forces pushed back Islamist and Tuareg rebel fighters from swaths of the north they had occupied the previous year.

Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb and another militant group attacked a hotel in Bamako in late 2015, killing 20 people.
