More than 700 Catalan mayors who face arrest over their support ffor an independence referendum banned by the Spanish government protested in Barcelona yesterday to shouts of “we will vote”. Brandishing their maces, the mayors sang Els Segadors, the hymn of the north-eastern region, whose executive is preparing to hold an independence referendum on October 1 in defiance of orders from Madrid. More than two thirds of Catalonia’s 948 mayors have pledged to open municipal premises for the vote, prompting Spain’s public prosecutor to order a criminal investigation and threaten them with arrest.
