Prisoners killed in fight at South Carolina jail
Seven inmates were killed and others seriously injured in fighting at a prison in South Carolina. Prisons spokesman Jeff Taillon said state law enforcement officials helped to secure Lee Correctional Institution yesterday morning after fights between inmates broke out on Sunday evening. He said 17 of the injured required medical attention outside the prison. The maximum-security facility in Bishopville, 96 kilometres north-east of the state capital Columbia, houses about 1,500 inmates, some of them violent and long-serving offenders. Two officers were stabbed there in 2015, an inmate killed another in February and four inmates were killed by two others in the state’s Kirkland Correctional Institution in Columbia last year.
