Pris­on­ers killed in fight at South Car­olina jail

Seven in­mates were killed and oth­ers se­ri­ously in­jured in fight­ing at a prison in South Car­olina. Prisons spokesman Jeff Tail­lon said state law en­force­ment of­fi­cials helped to se­cure Lee Cor­rec­tional In­sti­tu­tion yes­ter­day morn­ing af­ter fights be­tween in­mates broke out on Sun­day evening. He said 17 of the in­jured re­quired med­i­cal at­ten­tion out­side the prison. The max­i­mum-se­cu­rity fa­cil­ity in Bish­opville, 96 kilo­me­tres north-east of the state cap­i­tal Co­lum­bia, houses about 1,500 in­mates, some of them vi­o­lent and long-serv­ing of­fend­ers. Two of­fi­cers were stabbed there in 2015, an in­mate killed an­other in Fe­bru­ary and four in­mates were killed by two oth­ers in the state’s Kirk­land Cor­rec­tional In­sti­tu­tion in Co­lum­bia last year.
