Dubai’s first self-driving taxi cab will make a test run during Gitex Technology Week, the emirate’s Roads and Transport Authority said yesterday.

Mattar Al Tayer, the director general and chairman of the board of executive directors at the authority, said that the autonomous vehicle would be tested on routes at Dubai Silicon Oasis.

The taxi is equipped with cameras and sensors that analyse traffic and road conditions.

These inform the vehicle’s movement and help it to avoid collisions.

Dubai wants 25 per cent of all journeys to be made in self-driving cars by 2030.

Today the authority also plans to unveil robot cleaners that will operate at stations on the Dubai Metro system.
