“Boris: my case for Britain to stay in Europe” said The Sunday Times headline, above a previously unpublished piece by Boris Johnson. To work out what he really believed back in February, Johnson had written two versions of his weekly Daily Telegraph column, one proLeave, the other pro-Remain, before opting for the former. His method of self-analysis didn’t surprise the columnist Dominic Lawson. More than a year ago, Johnson emailed Lawson: “Am wrestling with the Europe thing. Reasons for staying in: Britain force for good in Europe; historic need for us to be there to stop them screwing up, the Scottish problem, etc; exit looks negative, anti-foreigner, etc. “Reasons to go: We settle our own destiny; freedom to strike our own trade deals… restores health to democracy.” Jeremy O’Grady
