“We value your call.” Really? Being kept on hold can make people’s blood boil – and it seems flattery only makes it worse. According to a Which? poll, “your call is valued” is the most irritating of all on-hold messages. It was cited by 47% of respondents; 28% most hate being told to see if their query can be solved online; while only 11% cite the obvious but honest “all our operators are busy”. The Chinese are so hooked on Scotch that obsessives are flying to the UK for £50,000 sprees. One London whisky shop told The Independent that it is visited by several Chinese men a week, who spend five-figure sums. One was so keen to get a few bottles of his chosen malt, he was willing to send his driver to the distillery, north of Aberdeen.
