A Cana­dian aca­demic has con­demned the canoe as a sym­bol of geno­cide. Misao Dean says the boats may come across as “morally un­touch­able” and “nat­u­ral”. But she ar­gues that they ac­tu­ally rep­re­sent Canada’s his­toric crimes to­wards its indige­nous pop­u­la­tion – and are to­day en­joyed by priv­i­leged, “al­most com­pletely” white peo­ple. The selfie stick’s days may be num­bered. Over the past year, searches for the de­vice on John Lewis’s web­site have fallen 50%. The de­cline fol­lows a back­lash against the sticks, which have been banned at at­trac­tions in­clud­ing Dis­ney­land and Wim­ble­don. John Lewis also notes a grow­ing de­mand for smaller fur­ni­ture – such as 4ft-wide dou­ble beds – as peo­ple move into smaller homes.
