Buenos Aires, Argentina
Fury at fatal rape: Tens of thousands of women demonstrated in central Buenos Aires and in cities across Argentina last week in an outpouring of anger and revulsion at the rape and torture earlier this month of a 16-year-old schoolgirl. Lucia Perez was attacked so brutally, she suffered cardiac arrest and later died from internal bleeding. The case, in the city of Mar del Plata, has caused outrage not only in Argentina, but across South America, a region where 98% of murders of women and girls go unpunished. Protesters against male violence marched under the slogan Ni Una Menos (“Not one woman less”). Smaller demonstrations were held in Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay, Uruguay, Guatemala and Mexico.
