Hostages freed: Somali pirates have released 26 sailors they had been holding as prisoners since March 2012. The crew of the FV Naham 3 – from Vietnam, Taiwan, Cambodia, Indonesia, China and the Philippines – are believed to have been among the last remaining captives held by Somali kidnappers. Given minimal food and water, two of the original crew died; the rest said they’d eaten rats to survive. It seems a £1.2m ransom was paid to secure their release. Pirate attacks off the coast of Somalia have become far rarer in recent years, partly because the seas there are now heavily patrolled.
