Hunger warning: International aid agencies have warned that thousands of children in northern Nigeria are at imminent risk of starvation as a result of the ongoing conflict in the region. Recent screenings by Save the Children found that in some areas, 40%-50% of children under five are acutely malnourished; and the figure is likely to be higher in areas that are still inaccessible owing to Boko Haram’s insurgency. The terrorists have laid waste to vast swathes of the northeast since taking up arms in 2009, displacing millions. This week, Peter Lundberg, the UN’s humanitarian coordinator for the region, warned that the crisis was unfolding “at high speed”, and that unless more help comes soon, 75,000 children could die in the next few months.
