Hanmer Springs, New Zealand
Powerful earthquake: A 7.8-magnitude earthquake, followed by thousands of powerful aftershocks, struck New Zealand on Monday. The epicentre of the quake, one of the strongest ever recorded in New Zealand, was close to Hanmer Springs, 70 miles north of Christchurch, where 185 people were killed by a quake in 2011. This time, only two people were confirmed dead. But with landslides blocking roads, hundreds of people had to be airlifted out of the town of Kaikoura, and across the rest of the country buildings collapsed or were badly damaged.
