“Mini Katrina”: New Orleans suffered its worst floods for years last week, with large parts of the city centre under water. Some residential neighbourhoods saw their worst flooding since the Hurricane Katrina disaster, with several feet of floodwater. Unlike the 2005 crisis, the floods were not caused by the failure of the levee system to keep river and seawater out, but the failure of the city’s drainage system – a 20-mile chain of canals and pipes – to cope with a storm that dumped almost ten inches of rain in a few hours.
