Circumcision law proposed: To the dismay of Muslim and Jewish leaders, Iceland could become the first country in Europe to ban the circumcision of boys for non-medical reasons. In Judaism, baby boys are circumcised at eight days old; in Muslim communities, it typically takes place later in childhood. A draft law currently going through parliament proposes penalties of up to six years in prison for anyone carrying out a circumcision. There are around 1,500 Muslims in Iceland and about 250 Jews; critics say a legal ban on circumcision is an attack on religious freedom that would make life there unsustainable for both communities.
