Macron kicks out hacks: President Emmanuel Macron is to evict the press corps from the rooms it has occupied at the Élysée Palace since the 1980s. Officially, Macron’s team have cited a lack of space as the reason for closing the media rooms (journalists will now be housed in another building). However, Macron has previously indicated that he wants to keep the press away from his government. Last month, he called for a “healthy distance” between the executive and the French media, and said he would resist any “proximity” between the two. The palace press association said that it “deeply deplores this unilateral decision... which constitutes an obstacle to journalists’ work”. Famously imageconscious, Macron has no spokesperson and gives few interviews, but often appears in photo shoots with his wife, Brigitte, in the Hello!-style weekly Paris Match.
