Who are the Big Five?
When on safari, people will either be trying to see the big five, or will be claiming to have seen them all on the same day (making it the ultimate safari win). Just so you know, the big five are officially the lion, elephant, rhino, buffalo and leopard.
The term originally comes from hunters, who picked these five as being the hardest and most dangerous to hunt. It has nothing to do with the animals being big. The listing was then coined by the safari industry, as a way of noting the five most important species to see.
