Uae-based Luis Garcia returning to cuba for habanosommelier challenge davidoff acquires controlling stake in asia distributor bluebell cigars
Following the acquisition of a 25% interest in its asia distributor, Bluebell Cigars, last year, Davidoff announced last month the acquisition of a majority interest.
Bluebell Cigars will be renamed Davidoff of Geneva (asia) and will continue to be led by Laurent de rougemont as managing director, and who, in his new role as senior vice president for asia, will report directly to oettinger Davidoff Ceo hans-kristian hoejsgaard.
Gerhard anderlohr, oettinger Davidoff’s current head of asia, will take up a new role as vice president for business development, with a particular focus on China and the Chinese consumer. Baqer Mohebi enterprises has announced that Luis Garcia, well-known in the industry as ‘Luigi’, is set to represent the Uae at the upcoming habanosommelier Master of Masters Challenge.
the challenge is the first of its kind, and is being held to celebrate the fifteenth anniversary of the habanosommelier Challenge. the contest will see the winners of all previous editions battle it out.
Garcia is the bar manager at the Cigar room and Mashrabiya Lounge at Fairmont the palm. hailing from Guadalajara, Mexico, he began his career in the kitchen, and eventually became a bartender. he soon learnt about spirits and how to mix cocktails.
soon after, he discovered the world of wine, which led him to becoming a sommelier after endless studies and hard work. Following numerous successes at various restaurants around the city, he worked as the head sommelier and consultant for Vinoteca.
he was introduced to habanos through the simposio internacional habana-habanos in Cuba. soon after, he began collaborating with Mexico’s authorised distributor for habanos by initiating different projects to implement the culture of habanos and its products throughout the country.
Garcia represented Mexico in the international habanosommelier Challlenge in 2011 and 2012, winning the competition the second time around. in the same year, he moved to Dubai and has since become the habanos brand ambassador for the food and beverage industry in the Uae.
indeed, Garcia has helped to organise the national habanosommelier Challenge in the Uae, and has trained contestants and judged during the competition.
