Uae-based Luis Gar­cia re­turn­ing to cuba for ha­banosom­me­lier chal­lenge david­off ac­quires con­trol­ling stake in asia dis­trib­u­tor blue­bell cigars

Fol­low­ing the ac­qui­si­tion of a 25% in­ter­est in its asia dis­trib­u­tor, Blue­bell Cigars, last year, David­off an­nounced last month the ac­qui­si­tion of a ma­jor­ity in­ter­est.

Blue­bell Cigars will be re­named David­off of Geneva (asia) and will con­tinue to be led by Lau­rent de rouge­mont as man­ag­ing di­rec­tor, and who, in his new role as se­nior vice pres­i­dent for asia, will re­port di­rectly to oet­tinger David­off Ceo hans-kris­tian hoe­js­gaard.

Ger­hard an­der­lohr, oet­tinger David­off’s cur­rent head of asia, will take up a new role as vice pres­i­dent for busi­ness de­vel­op­ment, with a par­tic­u­lar fo­cus on China and the Chi­nese con­sumer. Baqer Mo­hebi en­ter­prises has an­nounced that Luis Gar­cia, well-known in the in­dus­try as ‘Luigi’, is set to rep­re­sent the Uae at the up­com­ing ha­banosom­me­lier Mas­ter of Masters Chal­lenge.

the chal­lenge is the first of its kind, and is be­ing held to cel­e­brate the fif­teenth an­niver­sary of the ha­banosom­me­lier Chal­lenge. the con­test will see the win­ners of all pre­vi­ous edi­tions bat­tle it out.

Gar­cia is the bar man­ager at the Cigar room and Mashra­biya Lounge at Fair­mont the palm. hail­ing from Guadala­jara, Mex­ico, he be­gan his ca­reer in the kitchen, and even­tu­ally be­came a bar­tender. he soon learnt about spir­its and how to mix cock­tails.

soon af­ter, he dis­cov­ered the world of wine, which led him to be­com­ing a som­me­lier af­ter end­less stud­ies and hard work. Fol­low­ing nu­mer­ous suc­cesses at var­i­ous restau­rants around the city, he worked as the head som­me­lier and con­sul­tant for Vinoteca.

he was in­tro­duced to ha­banos through the sim­po­sio in­ter­na­cional ha­bana-ha­banos in Cuba. soon af­ter, he be­gan col­lab­o­rat­ing with Mex­ico’s au­tho­rised dis­trib­u­tor for ha­banos by ini­ti­at­ing dif­fer­ent projects to im­ple­ment the cul­ture of ha­banos and its prod­ucts through­out the coun­try.

Gar­cia rep­re­sented Mex­ico in the in­ter­na­tional ha­banosom­me­lier Chal­l­lenge in 2011 and 2012, win­ning the com­pe­ti­tion the se­cond time around. in the same year, he moved to Dubai and has since be­come the ha­banos brand am­bas­sador for the food and bev­er­age in­dus­try in the Uae.

in­deed, Gar­cia has helped to or­gan­ise the na­tional ha­banosom­me­lier Chal­lenge in the Uae, and has trained con­tes­tants and judged dur­ing the com­pe­ti­tion.
