Christie’s is set to host an anniversary sale to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Patek Philippe Nautilis Model. the international watch department will be carrying out the auction in four major cities—dubai, Geneva, hong Kong and New York—from october to December.

originally launched in 1976, the Nautilis Model was created out of Patek Philippe’s desire to create a sports watch that had both a strong personality and an unforgettable design. the brand has historically been known for its ultra-slim and complicated dress watches, but with the Nautilus launch in 1976, Patek Philippe took a risk by moving into seemingly unfamiliar territory. the watch was nothing like what the brand had done before. inspired by sea travellers, the watch’s design draws similarities to the porthole found on nearly every maritime vessel.

today, the Nautilus is still in production and throughout time it has gained style through subtle and carefully calculated changes while preserving its original spirit of a classic, elegant sports watch. At the time back of its launch, the Nautilus had a key role for Patek Philippe’s overall marketing strategy in response to the quartz revolution and the evolving fine watch market of the 1970s.
