Tradition with a twist

VIRTUOZITY’S CLUB LIMITADA RECENTLY descended on Marina Social, at the Intercontinental Hotel Dubai Marina, to experience an evening of classic wine and brandy tasting—along with some fabulous cigars, of course. The wines and brandy were supplied by MMI and Torres, the latter of which guided guests through a deep tradition of making fabulous wines and brandy, but did so with a beautifully modern touch.

A Torres representative was present at the event, with a pair of virtual reality goggles. Through them, guests could take a guided flight tour overlooking the various wineries owned by the brand, learning about the tradition of growing grapes and understanding how different weather conditions affect different vintages.

And for the cigars, Club Limitada lined up two special numbers—the Hoyo de Monterrey Petit Robusto and the Double Coronas from the same brand. a highly celebrated cigar—and with good reason. Packed full of flavour but short enough to offer a sensible smoking time, it’s perfect for after dinner or lunch. Indeed, it’s suitable for just about any occasion.

The Petit Robusto is constructed beautifully, with a rustic brown wrapper that wears its imperfections proudly. There are a few veins, but they’re smoothed out professionally, giving the impression that they’re meant to be there. And, naturally, the thickring-gauge stick is packed extremely solidly, making it a hefty, satisfying thing to hold.

The first third starts with a typical flavour profile of cedar and leather, but the cigar blasts you pretty quickly with pepper notes, creating a spicy and tingly profile. Things settle down as you make your way through the first third, with the pepper giving way a little to cocoa and bitter chocolate. If you’ve ever had an artisan chili-chocolate bar, you’ll know that the notes go beautifully together, and as you make your way into the second third, things are livened up with the addition of nutmeg and almonds.
