ONE OF THE BIG PROBLEMS with new areas of a young city is that many brands simply forget there’s an old part as well. Yes, the new areas are always the hip and trendy urban centres their developers wanted them to be, but not every company and tourist spot simply ups and moves to that area.
It’s easy for urban planners to forget there are still people happily existing in the older parts, running businesses and providing those important functions any city needs to survive. Qatar’s capital, Doha is a case in point. Just like Dubai the city shifted and so did the five-star hotels, moving operations to heart of the new area.
In Doha this meant a wholesale shift (or in many cases the opening of their first property) around the Corniche, in the stunning West Bay. Dominated by skyscrapers, West Doha is very much the ‘must have’ address from the world’s competing hotel brands.
