ONE OF THE BIG PROB­LEMS with new ar­eas of a young city is that many brands sim­ply for­get there’s an old part as well. Yes, the new ar­eas are al­ways the hip and trendy ur­ban cen­tres their de­vel­op­ers wanted them to be, but not ev­ery com­pany and tourist spot sim­ply ups and moves to that area.

It’s easy for ur­ban plan­ners to for­get there are still peo­ple hap­pily ex­ist­ing in the older parts, run­ning busi­nesses and pro­vid­ing those im­por­tant func­tions any city needs to sur­vive. Qatar’s cap­i­tal, Doha is a case in point. Just like Dubai the city shifted and so did the five-star ho­tels, mov­ing op­er­a­tions to heart of the new area.

In Doha this meant a whole­sale shift (or in many cases the open­ing of their first prop­erty) around the Cor­niche, in the stun­ning West Bay. Dom­i­nated by sky­scrapers, West Doha is very much the ‘must have’ ad­dress from the world’s com­pet­ing ho­tel brands.

But the old town didn’t sim­ply dis­ap­pear. It’s still there and along with it many multi­na­tional com­pa­nies, medium-sized busi-
