Lots of big cinema releases this month, including Johnny Depp as a gang boss in Black Mass (he’s already being tipped for an Oscar for his work in this one), plus Jake Gyllenhaal goes for a climb in Everest.
It’s 1974 and FBI agent John Connolly (Joel Edgerton) has an idea to save Boston from the warring Italian and Irish gangs. Deciding the Italians are a much bigger threat, Connolly convinces Irish mob leader Whitey Bulger (Johnny Depp) to provide information for immunity. The deal is a double-edged sword – as Bulger feeds Connolly a valuable stream of intel, the Irish are given carte blanche to carry out heinous crimes. As Bulger, Johnny Depp is
as equally unrecognisable as he is terrifying. This could be Depp’s best performance in quite some time.
