Teeth whitening at Ibtisama; The Elixir Clinic opens

Ibtisama means ‘a smile’ in Arabic, and it’s also the name of a teeth whitening brand that has three outlets in Abu Dhabi, with the latest opening in Marina Mall back in December.

Their USP is a simple one – whiter, brighter teeth without any pain and without any loss to the layer of enamel that protects them. It’s done with an LED light that removes stains and the light enhances the effect of a whitening gel that’s applied and is made of sodium bicarbonate. Don’t expect to leave with piano key-white teeth, although that’s a good thing – the results are more gradual and natural looking.

Three packages are available, including a 20-minute one for people who’ve already had their teeth whitened, while the most expensive is a 60-minute session for coffee fans and smokers.

The latter is a real VIP experience and takes place in a massage chair and you can also watch videos on a Samsung Gear VR headset.

It can feel intrusive but isn’t painful (a gum shield is placed in your mouth for three or four sessions during the hour-long treatment), and our teeth were certainly several shades whiter afterwards. You’ll need to visit every three months or so, although Ibtisama does sell whitening strips and toothpaste to help keep the effect for longer.
