GET OUT ON THE WATER

Freediving

Think you have what it takes to dive deep into the sea without an oxygen tank strapped on your back? The UAE has a rich history of freediving thanks to its pearl divers, and has seen a resurgence amongst residents here in the capital despite the risks. “In terms of being humans and understanding our own limits, freediving is at the cutting edge of that,” says Alex Boulting, co-founder of FreedivingUAE. This club teaches AIDA certified courses for beginners and experts in both Abu Dhabi and Dubai that will include theory and pool work.

Various locations, including Abu Dhabi, from Dhs400 for beginner’s course. freedivinguae.com

Wakeboarding

Whether you’re a newbie or an old hand, the water cable park at Al Forsan is a good spot to hit the water. Having hosted the WWA World Wake Championships a handful of times, the facilities feature two freshwater lakes for beginners and professionals (the pro lake is loaded with obstacles to really test your skills), cable speeds of 29 to 38kph as well as equipment rentals.

Al Forsan International Sports Resort, Sas Al Nakhl, Abu Dhabi, daily 9am to 11pm. Dhs125 for one hour. Tel: (02) 5568555. Taxi: Al Forsan. alforsan.com

WHITEWATER RAFTING

Living in a desert doesn’t have to stop you from riding the rapids. The country’s first man-made rafting circuit (complete with manicured palm trees dotted along the course) at Wadi Adventure will see you test your skills against the foamy waters. There’s three separate runs to try, based on your skill level and experience.

Wadi Adventure, Jebel Hafeet, Al Ain, Abu Dhabi, Dhs50 entrance fee, Dhs100 for a 60-minute session. Tel: (03) 7818422. Taxi: Wadi Adventure, Al Ain. wadiadventure.ae

BAREFOOT SKIING

Ditch the board and go waterskiing with your two feet instead. Barefooting, as it’s called, first started in 1947 in the United States and is gaining ground right here in Abu Dhabi. Halla Walla hosts barefooting lessons at the Al Bandar Marina that will teach you how to hold your own against the current using two different techniques (boom or board). The company also hosts barefoot clinics where three to five people can learn about the sport together.

Halla Walla, Al Raha, Abu Dhabi, Dhs145. Tel: (054) 4995770. Taxi: Al Bandar Marina, Al Raha. hallawalla.ae
