Japan is the focus on Saadiyat this month
Japanese art at the Louvre, plus Mexican star Jorge Martin’s Wings Of Mexico lands at Manarat Al Saadiyat
Louvre Abu Dhabi is paying tribute to Japanese creativity with its new exhibition – Japanese Connections: The
Birth of Modern Décor. It will feature a display of 19th and 20th century paintings, prints and folding screens that place a focus on the relationship between Japan and France.
There will be 41 pieces of art and 15 documents created by 12 talents on display on Saadiyat Island, including French stars Paul Sérusier, Pierre Bonnard, Maurice Denis, Ker-Xavier Roussel and Édouard Vuillard. The exhibition will look at the ukiyo-e style of painting (it’s a style of woodblock prints and paintings popular in the 1800s that influenced European painters). Works by five Japanese ukiyo-e artists will be on display as well – Katsushika Hokusai, Hara Zaimei, Utagawa Hiroshige, Kano Tanshin and Toshusai Sharaku.
There’ll also be a weekend of Japanese-inspired events. Big In Japan will run October 26 to 27 and will feature DJs, poetry cookery classes and anime movie screenings.
