Jake Gyllenhaal’s first screen role, at the age of ten, was as Billy Crystal’s son in the 1991 comedy City Slickers, Donnie Darko Brokeback Mountain Prince Of Persia: Stronger, Sands Of Time.
How important was it for you to tell this story from Jeff’s point of view?
“I’m not saying that I’m uninterested in the bombing, but more the effects of it and how it brings people together through tragedy – and I know that’s what Jeff wants.”
To prepare for the role, you spent a lot of time with Jeff Bauman – are you close to him now?
“It’s a complicated one in that I always feel odd, like even doing this interview or being in the middle of shooting and then playing him and he texts me ‘Where are you?’ and I’m like I’m trying to not look like you for an interview [laughs].”
Do you think of Jeff as a hero?
“Yes, if you’re going to put a word or an adjective alongside him, hero would definitely be one of them.”
