issue 334] regarding the change of date to Ironman Nice 2017 and Ironman’s response.
Just like Ian, I arranged my travel to Nice based on the event as pronounced by the Ironman organisation. I’ve also been confronted with all the same costs due to the date change. That is why I would like to stress that the answer that Ian was given is not at all satisfactory. In fact, it’s an arrogant answer that isn’t worthy of the Ironman brand. [Ironman replied: “IRONMAN was not made aware of the City of Nice’s plan for a moratorium until October but we understand, respect and fully support their decision. We stand with the City of Nice united against terror and are determined for this race to take place in 2017. Athletes were offered a full refund, a transfer to another open IRONMAN race in our region or to race on the new date.”]
I would like to advise the Ironman organisation to reconsider the way they’ve handled triathletes who signed up for the Nice race. LARS MØLLER, THE NETHERLANDS
RECOGNISE!
I noticed in your January issue you had a very comprehensive list of events, however one that was missing that really deserves to be recognised and promoted is Sophia Warner’s Superhero Series (superheroseries.co.uk), which Sophia, a Paralympic track and field athlete, officially launched in November last year and which allows disabled and non-disabled people to take part in triathlons – either solo, or in a team.
Sophia’s first event in 2015 gave me one of my proudest moments to date – seeing my three daughters, one of whom has a number of medical issues, complete a triathlon. It’s the only event of its kind in the UK that I’m aware of and gives a lot of people, who wouldn’t necessarily get the opportunity, a chance to take part in a triathlon. PAUL WEEKS, EMAIL
220 replies Thanks for highlighting this great event, Paul. While we didn’t feel the paratriathlon events at the Rio Games got the attention they deserved, it’s great to see such events launching across the UK and increasing awareness of para-sport, and, in this case, combining able-bodied and para-athletes in the same arena.
