I’m very new to tri, but in a previous issue I read that ‘rowing’ could help in winter training. So, having placed reasonably well in the English and Welsh Indoor Rowing Champs, I thought I’d share a session to help my fellow triers.

Rowing is all about the leg drive. It’s push with the legs, then pull with the arms. A session that really helps build power is the classic 30r20 – 30mins @ 20 strokes/min. Aim to keep the pace (measured in 500m splits) consistent without increasing the stroke rate. Keep it smooth, but with power.

Indoor rowing is one of the best all-round exercises you can do. Just focus on technique and delivering controlled power, then next time you face a hill, you’ll fly up it! Mark Lysons
