ASICS SOFTSHELL

220 Triathlon Magazine - - KIT ZONE - asics.com/gb

This softshell jacket from Asics is one of the warmer options on test, with an elasticated waistband to really keep the wind chill out. There are two external zip pockets and two handy pockets inside for storage, plus a housing over the zipper to keep the neckline comfortable. So far, so good, but we didn’t really get on with the cuffs, which we felt were too baggy and, as the arms are pretty long for a size medium, we found ourselves rolling the sleeves up mid-run to counter the annoyance. Breathability was adequate, but not on par with the Saucony or Ashmei jackets here; during a steady 15km run we got, and remained, pretty sweaty. The back is completely black with no reflectives, which doesn’t win any safety points either for an off-season option. So for us, it’s more of a warm-up only jacket that we wouldn’t use for long training runs or anything approaching tempo pace, but it’s got plenty of pockets and is sufficient for winter runs at a plodding pace.
