Red hot running! Sizzle

this summer! No, not some kind of saucy Lycra-filled final discipline antics, but the Commonwealth Games 10km medallist Julian Goater’s essential spring sets and group sessions based in sunny Bracknell, complete with brilliant infrared special effects lifted straight out of thePredatormovies (see image right). Goater’s sound speed advice is as relevant today as it was 20 years ago, with varying intensities, adding intervals and injury prevention all thrown into the pre-season mix.

The race reports in issue 86 are duathlon heavy, with a couple of races that we’d certainly like to see revived – Powerman Guernsey and the220-organised Giverny trail duathlon in northern France – dominating the race section. The latter was won by world championship-winning off-road triathlete Olivier Marceau, with UK racing legend Simon Lessing firing the starter’s horn.

We also reviewed sports nutrition giant Science in Sport’s first energy bar – the Go Bar, which is still going strong in their now much-expanded range 20 years later.

As it was 1997 after all, the gear pages are full of two-piece tri-suits and plenty of flesh, which is surprisingly timely as we’ll be turning to the shorts and singlets theme next month in our two-piece race suits test.
