Warm up well

A decent warm-up is key, so treat this as importantl­y as the main set. Make sure you include a long jog warmup, some activation exercises, drills and accelerati­on runs.

Use cones, trees or lampposts

You want to keep the distance measurable and standardis­ed so you can repeat the session and so that the distance of each rep doesn’t creep up or down.

Tread softly

Fast running generates higher impact so you can counteract this by running on a softer surface. You also want even ground – football or rugby pitches are generally ideal for this.
