The scheme that’s inspired us this month

The perfect balance is something we often strive for in our rooms, but as this ‘modern meets mid-century’ scheme proves, simplicity is the key, as well as an eye for making pieces work effortlessly in pairs. Deceptively straightforward though it may appear at first glance, this sitting room is a masterclass in perfect pairings. They may not be obvious, but the more you look, the more you see how thoughtfully the scheme has been put together, and how much care has been taken to create well-matched combinations throughout.

Almost every element in this space has a connection with another, from the pebble grey of the sofa and complementary wall colour to the dark wood of the armchair frames and the sofa legs. Even the vibrant vertical stripes of the canvas above the contemporary fireplace are mirrored in the multicoloured book spines nearby, and bold poppy print cushions reinforce the link between the chairs, marking them out as a set. Meanwhile, the mismatched cushions on the sofa introduce a relaxed, less uniform finish.

This scheme also exudes a natural, organic air thanks to the wooden wall panelling, flooring and ceiling light. And the gentle curves of the armchairs, sofa and floor lamps soften the straight lines of the chimney breast, coffee table and artwork, creating a space that’s perfect for finding your own equilibrium.

Wooden elements in varying tones add a warm organic feel
