911 Porsche World - - Letters -

As a subscriber since issue one, and a long term Porsche owner, I would like to warn readers of a recent, potentially disastrous incident with my car.

For a number of years I have used Porsche made cigarette lighter (the 'charge-o-mat' type) chargers for my GT3, 964 and 944. Recently, I noticed a strange burning smell in the garage and traced it to the charger for the GT3. I discovered that both the lighter socket in the car and the wall plug parts of the charger had melted, but fortunately not caught fire. The charger is damaged beyond repair, but the consequences could have been severe, as I keep the three Porsches, and another car, in the same garage, which is attached to the house.

Users should be made aware, as I believed they would just stop working if there was a problem, and not melt as in this case. I have stopped using the Porsche chargers and purchased a Cetek charger instead. I have contacted Porsche GB about this too, but have had no response as yet. Garry Staunton, via email
