Threat of Spurs’ visit looming large
KAT LEE’S CLARETS’ VIEW
WHAT was quite a dull match against Sunderland this weekend, I guess we can take away the fact we got a point away from home, given our awful away record (the worst there’s ever been in the Premier League.)
However, it’s slightly hindered by the fact it was against Sunderland, the team that have a dark cloud over them and who must surely this time be getting relegated, after years of ‘great escapes’. Should we be slightly more embarrassed by our performance? Maybe.
Given Sunderland’s poor performance this weekend, I’d say more like probably. It’s just not really feasible to me why we can’t get more than a draw away from home.
Granted, it sees us in good stead going in to the international break, but we could always be higher up the table. I know our home form is astonishing at the moment, but what we have to remember is that a relentless Tottenham are coming to us in two weeks time and we haven’t played at home in four games.
Following that we have tough tests coming up in all directions and it’s only in true Burnley style that we could let this slip between our fingers and end up in the drop zone just at the wrong time of the year. I’d like to be less negative about it, but I think we have really got to give it our all now, with no exceptions.
We’ve got title challenging Tottenham that are hardly going to leave Turf Moor without three points, closely followed by a Tuesday night match against Stoke and then two tough away games against an in form Everton and a relegation battling Middlesbrough.
We’re still not quite at a point where we are mathematically safe from relegation and whilst teams underneath us have started playing well, without any wins we could be in trouble.
Although it’s technically very unlikely that Sunderland, Hull and Middlesbrough will overtake us on points at this stage in the season, it’s also not impossible.
It basically means every game now could be crucial to keeping us afloat. Burnley have only surprised me this season so far, with wins and draws against big times that have come totally unexpected, and unfair losses away from home.
So, by those standards, there’s absolutely nothing stopping us from working hard (like we always seem to do) and achieving a few more points to keep us high enough the table without causing any real panic.
Even if we stay up in 17th place, we will have still done what a lot of critics thought is impossible for us, and that’s fine by all of us clarets.
