Best of the bunch

Accrington Observer - - LEISURE -

Tricyrtis hirta THIS is a really exotic beauty from Japan – although its common name of hairy toad lily would not indicate this.

Beautiful white orchid-like flowers are heavily spotted with deep purple, set atop handsome dark green leaves. It’s a hardy and wonderful plant for shade that flowers around now so will really stand out.

However, don’t tuck it away at the back as you want to be able to admire its beauty.

It does best in a damp soil and therefore is not an ideal candidate for pots, where it will easily dry out.

Watch out for slugs and snails who are also fond of it.
