Stanley only one aim for season
ACCRINGTON Stanley boss John Coleman has reiterated that his team’s sole aim this season is to earn promotion to League One.
The Reds have gone close to escaping League Two in the past couple of years, but ultimately fell short at the end of the campaign.
This time around, Accrington have made a good start to the season and are one of the teams challenging near the top, and Coleman insists that needs to remain the case over the next few months.
“It was made very clear at the start of the season that promotion is our only aim,” he told the club’s official website.
“I think that the lads have bought into it and they are acting like promotion candidates, we aren’t going to go away that’s for sure – we’ve got to try and get ourselves into those automatic slots and you only do that by winning.
“We’ve got good experience in the dressing room but I’d like us to be a bit louder out on the pitch, I like to hear the players opinions and I like to know what led them to make the decisions that they make and it’s important that we have an opendoor policy for players to speak.”
Stanley currently find themselves third in the League Two table on 29 points, having won nine of their 15 matches so far this season.
Coleman has been fairly pleased with what he has seen, but admits that there is still room for improvement.
“It’s a promising start but could do better. At times in games we’ve looked breathtaking but within 10 minutes in that same game we end up hanging on,” he said.
“We’ve got to find that right balance between attack and defence. The disappointing thing is that we get into a winning position but we don’t go and do what Luton have been doing in recent weeks and putting daylight between ourselves and the opposition.
“We have a tendency to just try and see out a onegoal margin, we did that well against Coventry but you can’t do that each and every week and there are sides who are capable of hurting you and luck will transpire against you at times.”
Stanley will now hope to make it two wins in a row when they are back in home action on Saturday, welcoming Barnet for a game at the Wham Stadium.
