Shoplifter who stole £1,100 of goods is jailed

A PRO­LIFIC shoplifter who stole more than £1,100 worth of goods from town cen­tre shops has been jailed.

Kristo­pher John Mur­phy tar­geted four dif­fer­ent Ac­cring­ton stores over a five-month pe­riod this year and made off with toi­letries, make-up, meat, choco­late and gift sets.

The 29-year-old, of Welling­ton Street, Ac­cring­ton, pleaded guilty at Black­burn Mag­is­trates Court to 11 counts of shoplift­ing and one count of fail­ing to sur­ren­der into cus­tody hav­ing been re­leased on bail.

He was jailed for a to­tal of 12 weeks.

The court heard how Mur­phy was a ‘se­rial shoplifter’ and ‘per­sis­tent of­fender’ and com­mit­ted the of­fences while sub­ject to post-cus­to­dial sen­tence su­per­vi­sion.

Mur­phy stole more than £1,000 worth of items from the Ac­cring­ton Boots store be­tween Septem­ber 7 and Oc­to­ber 10.

The court heard how he stole nu­mer­ous cos­met­ics items on Septem­ber 7 worth £385 and make-up worth £285 be­tween Septem­ber 19 and 20.

He then re­turned to the store on Septem­ber 30 and stole £140 worth of gift sets and then again on Oc­to­ber 10 where he pinched £195.50 worth of toi­letries.

Mur­phy tar­geted the Tesco Ex­press store in Ac­cring­ton on four dif­fer­ent oc­ca­sions dur­ing Septem­ber and Oc­to­ber.

He stole meat, sliced meat and steaks worth £106 and on a sep­a­rate oc­ca­sion made off with choco­late and de­odor­ant.

The de­fen­dant stole £14.50 worth of make-up from Lloyds Phar­macy in Ac­cring­ton on June 15 and then £20 worth of gift sets from the same store on Septem­ber 22.

His fi­nal shoplift­ing in­ci­dent was on Oc­to­ber 13 where he stole wash­ing up tablets from Asda in Ac­cring­ton worth £10.
