Volunteers snap up 368 bags of rubbish to clear popular route
SUSTRANS volunteers collected an incredible 368 bin bags of litter along the 1.4 mile path between the Fallowfield Loop, a cycle and walking route, and the Ashton Canal.
Volunteers worked for three days along the path, which is part of the National Cycle Network (NCN) and which links two popular walking and cycle routes.
Litter levels have been persistently high along Route 60, the former Stockport Canal, so local volunteers decided to act.
Among the piles of drinks cans, crisp packets and confectionery wrappings, volunteers hauled away an abandoned bed, supermarket trolleys and numerous black bags full of rubbish.
Organiser Charles Kinniburgh said: “This is an attractive tree-lined path in an urban environment which allows people to walk and cycle away from traffic, but the amount of litter on it has been putting people off using it for some time. We had a fantastic response from the local council Neighbourhoods Team who made available a community centre and provided refreshments throughout.
“The response of volunteers from Sustrans and other local groups such as the Manchester and Stockport Canal Society was truly amazing.
“Despite some challenging weather, 42 volunteers turned out over a long weekend to successfully clear the path. Sustrans will now work with the local council and community to ensure that the route keeps looking good for everyone to use and enjoy.”
Sustrans volunteer co-ordinator Abigail Pound said: “Thanks to all the people who turned out to clear Route 60. Many people complain about the path, which was in a shocking state. We hope fewer people will be tempted to drop rubbish now the route is clear.”
The National Cycle Network includes over 14,000 miles of cycle and walking routes, many of which are traffic-free.
Sustrans is committed to making it easier for more people to walk and cycle, and manages some NCN routes, including the Fallowfield Loop.
