In the sum­mer is­sue of Air Gun­ner, the ar­ti­cle by Gary Chilling­worth on page 55 stated that the wind fac­tor has a greater ef­fect on a .22 over a .177 be­cause of its slower rate of travel and sur­face area of­fer­ing more re­sis­tance. Jump to Jim Chapman’s ar­ti­cle on page 80 of the same is­sue and he states ‘ the heav­ier pro­jec­tiles con­serv­ing en­ergy are less in­flu­enced by wind’. Please ex­plain. D W WIL­LIAMS Hello DW I think the dif­fer­ence is ex­plained by the power lev­els be­ing de­scribed. Gary was shoot­ing at sub 12ft.lbs, whilst Jim has ac­cess to vastly higher power ri­fles in Amer­ica. Be­cause of this, his ri­fles will op­er­ate with a wide range of pel­lets and this al­lows him to choose the one with the high­est bal­lis­tic co­ef­fi­cient, which can also be the heav­i­est. High ve­loc­ity, al­lied to a good bal­lis­tic co­ef­fi­cient will in­deed of­fer the best per­for­mance in the wind, but back here in Eng­land my own tests agree with Gary’s. Ed.
